Winehouse gets visa, too late for awards

LONDON - Amy Winehouse’s work visa was approved after all, but the State Department’s change of heart Friday wasn’t in time for her to make the trip to Sunday’s Grammy Awards.

Instead, the rehabbing British singer will go ahead with the backup plan that was concocted while her visa was still in limbo: a live performance, via satellite, from a studio in London where she will also accept any awards that may come her way. Winehouse and her acclaimed “Back to Black” album are nominated for Grammys in six categories.

“Unfortunately, due to the logistics involved and timing complications, Amy will not be traveling to the U.S. to perform at the Grammys in person,” the Outside Organization said in a statement.

Winehouse’s original visa application was denied under U.S. immigration rules regarding the “use and abuse of narcotics,” a senior State Department official said Friday, on condition of anonymity because the U.S. Embassy in London’s application deliberations are confidential. As a British citizen, Winehouse would not normally need a visa to enter the United States — unless she wanted to work or perform.

The Department of Homeland Security had been “rapidly” processing her appeal, the official said. But the reversal, barely 48 hours before the beginning of the telecast, came too late.

“Amy would like to thank all of those people, in particular the staff involved at the U.S. Embassy in London, who have all worked so hard to expedite her application,” Outside said. “She is looking forward to being a part of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards with her Sunday night performance and to going back to the U.S. soon.”

Even if Winehouse had been able to board a non-stop flight from London to Los Angeles immediately after her visa came through Friday, the earliest she would have arrived would have been the wee hours of Saturday morning. That grueling itinerary would have left little time for her to rest and recover from a more than 12-hour journey, rehearse, and face the inevitable storm of attention that’s been building during the will-she-or-won’t-she-be-there drama of the past days.

Winehouse’s potent blend of blues, jazz, pop and soul has won praise from critics and fans, but her chaotic personal life has increasingly upstaged her music. Concerned family members regularly beg Winehouse to seek help in letters splashed across the pages of British tabloid newspapers and magazines.

Last month, The Sun newspaper ran still images from a video that it claimed showed Winehouse inhaling fumes from a small pipe. The images were said to have been filmed during a party at her London home.

Shortly thereafter, Winehouse entered a London rehabilitation center, and has been questioned by police. Outside said earlier Friday that she was leaving the center to prepare for her performance. It added that the singer would remain under medical supervision.

Other British music acts have had difficulty securing visas. Lily Allen was scheduled to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards in September, but the pop star’s visa was revoked. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services hasn’t commented, but her manager has said he suspected it was because Allen was arrested in London in June after an altercation with photographers.

Spears’ father strengthens control over her affairs…

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The father of troubled singer Britney Spears has strengthened control over her affairs with an order to fire her business manager and a demand that he turn over her personal records, a court document showed on Friday.

The document, which was posted on celebrity news Web site TMZ.com, said that Howard Grossman was notified of a court order granting Jamie Spears the right to fire him as the singer’s business manager and require Grossman “turn over all documents, records, and assets relating to Britney Spears.”

The move follows charges by Spear’s mother Lynne in court documents made public earlier this week that the pop star’s self-style manager, Sam Lufti, had drugged her to take control of her home, life and finances.

Late last week the 26 year-old, who rose to stardom as a Disney child star and became a teenage pop singing sensation, was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital and placed under psychiatric evaluation.

Her father was given temporary control over her affairs by a Los Angeles court.

By Wednesday, Spears had left the UCLA Medical Center and one day later, Jamie Spears was back in court in a closed-door hearing to strengthen his conservatorship over her assets.

Spears’ life has spun out of control since her divorce from ex-husband Kevin Federline in 2006. She has spent time in rehab, been photographed in public wearing no underwear and exhibited bizarre behavior such as wearing pink wings and talking in a British accent despite being from Louisiana.

She has battled Federline for custody of their two young sons, and in another public disclosure on Friday, Spears’ current Los Angeles attorneys in that case, the firm Trope and Trope, have filed court papers asking to be dropped from the case, according to TMZ.com.

Justin Timberlake Smacks Into A Car…

  Justin Timberlake in Pepsi's

More than 93 million people watched last year’s Super Bowl, and with this year’s contest only a few days away, will it be the game itself or the ads that get viewers talking the most? “People who aren’t even sports fans watch the Super Bowl, just to watch the commercials,” Derek Jeter, shortstop for the New York Yankees, said in a press video hyping the ads.

With that in mind, 26 brands have gone all out this year to provide star-packed ads involving celebs like Jeter, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Shakira, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes and LL Cool J. The stars are making appearances via their images and/or music, most of them for Pepsi.

“PepsiCo is the second-biggest advertiser in the Super Bowl this year,” after Anheuser-Busch, USA Today advertising reporter Theresa Howard said. “Pepsi-Cola alone, they’ve got two minutes of ad time. When you’ve got a big product, you want to be on the biggest stage.”

With that in mind, here’s a sneak peek of some clips — which run during the Super Bowl at a rate of $2.7 million per 30 seconds — hoping to make a splash.

Lil Wayne: New Album ‘Will Stick With You Forever

Posted by Fuzzy

Lil Wayne

February 01, 2008, 10:45 AM ET

Mariel Concepcion, N.Y.

Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter III” has been delayed numerous times in the past six months, but in his first interview since his recent arrest on felony drugs and weapons charges in Arizona, the rapper promises the new album will be worth the wait.

“It’s one of those albums people are really waiting on, so I made it so that whatever is on it will stick with you forever,” he tells Billboard of the project, which has been plagued with leaks. “I’m taking my time with it. And I’m giving artists I respect and people I want to do songs with — not songs the label fixed — an opportunity to collaborate.”

“I think this album is going to be one of my best albums,” he continues. “I’m a true perfectionist. I might have to work out a deal with Universal to shoot a video to for all these songs, that’s how crazy they all are. Every one of them is a movie.”

Although Wayne was happy to discuss “Tha Carter III,” which is expected in March or April via Cash Money/Universal, he didn’t want to talk about what went down in Arizona, where he’s been ordered to return for a Feb. 12 hearing. “I’ve got nothing to say about that,” he replied when asked about the arrest.

The new album’s official single, the Deezle-produced “Lollipop,” features Static and will be serviced to radio shortly. A video for it was recently shot in Las Vegas. Other guests on the set include Hurricane Chris, Corey Gunz, Tyga, Jibbs, Shanell, Kidd Kidd, Mack Maine and Lil Mama. Jim Jonsin, the Alchemist and Cool and Dre contributed production.

Wayne has released six albums and made more than 40 guest appearances since 1999 — 17 of those collaborations in the last two years — not to mention the massive amount of mixtapes and leaked tracks that routinely appear online.

“I’ve found out that I love doing music for others,” he says. “You’re making history when you’re making music with somebody else, for somebody else. Plus, I find that when I do that, it doesn’t get leaked. And when it does, it doesn’t do what it does when it’s one of my songs. I get a real joy. And it’s another reason why I was able to wait so long to put another album out — because these features keep me eating and making money.”

The Epochs Release Debut LP Feb. 19

Posted by Fuzzy

The EpochsOn February 19th, Brooklyn’s The Epochs will release their self-titled debut LP through The Rebel Group.

For brothers Ryan & Hays Holladay, the craft of songwriting has always been closely linked with the recording process. Along with drummer Kotchy and bassist Kevin Smith, The Epochs (pronounced “ee-poks”) have created a sprawling record that cuts no corners in production quality or arrangement.

From the bombastic electronics on “Opposite Sides”, to the seething orchestration and manipulated guitar of “Mouths To Feed”, to the playful rhythms of “Giving Tree”, The Epochs never stops in one place long enough to be pigeonholed.

The Epochs
It’s the diversity of The Epochs that turned heads when they took the stage with Girl Talk at SXSW and has allowed them to share the stage with artists ranging from The Walkmen and Tokyo Police Club to Lady Sovereign and Spank Rock. Stay tuned for winter tour dates with Mobius Band. All of our New York friends can catch The Epochs at the Mercury Lounge on February 12th.

Sheryl Crow Latest To Slam Intrusive Media

Posted by Fuzzy

Sheryl CrowSinger Sheryl Crow has slammed the media for prying into one of the most devastating periods of her life - and the people who bought the tabloid reports for entertainment.

The 45-year-old was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2006 just days after ending her three-year relationship with fellow cancer sufferer and cyclist Lance Armstrong.

And the star believes the events sparked an ever-present paparazzi frenzy that put a strain on her recovery.

She says, “Having 100 paparazzi outside my gate at all times because of the terrible things that were happening, it really spoke to me about who we are. If this is what makes people want to buy magazines - someone at their absolute lowest - that is a very sad message. I found the whole experience was very difficult. I went from being linked with one of the most famous cancer survivors to then being diagnosed with cancer.”
